ICE HOCKEY SPREADING IN UAE

Ice hockey is becoming one of the fastest growing sports in the hot country of UAE. On the back of the national team winning the Asian Cup in 2009 and finishing third in the Asian Olympic Winter Games, ice hockey is enjoying a boon to such an extent that development programmes are over subscribed.

Representatives of the IIHF, who are in the capital to oversee a training camp for the best Under 17 players in Asia, have vowed to help the country cope with the increasing interest.

"Ice hockey is developing so fast in the UAE, as it all over the Middle East," Jukka Tiikkaja said.

KENTON BACK WITH THE DEVILS

Defenceman Kenton Smith has once again teamed up with the Elite League Devils for next season. Cardiff also have offers out to players from last season’s Devils team and Adams says: “We are not going to rush in at this stage.

“The Central League play-offs are coming to an end in North America and rumours persist that between six and nine teams may fold.

“If that happens there would be a lot more players suddenly available.

“We did the same last season, staying patient and striking at the right time.”

LAUREN DELIGHTED

Lauren Summers has said that she is extremely delighted to earn the call up for the 2014 Winter Olympics. The 22-year-old, a former King Alfred’s Community & Sports College, Wantage pupil, who plays for Bracknell Queen Bees in the Women’s Premier League, has already represented her country.

In 2009 she was called up to the England women’s squad and played in the Hocktoberfest in Canada.

GV TEAM BEATS THE FORDS

The GV ice hockey team convincingly defeated the Fords 4-1 in the latest ice hockey match. The second stanza began with a nice Jaguar penalty kill, thanks to Boyle, John Mango and Steve Fedena. Then Bryan Ely back passed the puck to Boyle who was flying down the slot in front of Haverford's goalie and deposited the disk into the net for a 2-1 GV lead.

Ely also had a nice short-handed breakaway, but met a lucky goaltender who stopped the opportunity.

Strong play on defense by Matt Hurley kept the Jags on top as the period ended.

MORGAN TO TAKE BREAK FROM ICE HOCKEY

Phantom's Morgan has revealed that he is about to take a break from ice hockey. Morgan, who has established himself as one of the true Phantoms greats since coming through the junior system at the club, has cited the pressures of work and family commitments as the reason behind his shock decision.

It is understood that the 28 year-old - a butcher by profession - has been finding it increasingly difficult to balance the pressures of work, training late at night, and being away from his young family every weekend.

SIMON HAS CONFIDENCE IN FORM

Simon has said that the current hot streak that Devils are enjoying will not come to an end that soon. Weekend wins over Nottingham Panthers (6-5) and Dundee Stars (7-1) took the Devils top with third-placed Sheffield in the best position to launch a challenge having games in hand.

The league leaders head north with former Steelers Gerad Adams, Ryan Finnerty and Phil Hill in their ranks and will be backed by a large contingent of Devils fans.

PELLE AIMING FOR GOAL TRAIL

Cardiff Devils’ Jon Pelle has said that he is aiming to stay on a goal trail. Ivy League graduate Pelle has already scored 58 points for Devils this season – one short of the total he hit last season in leading Rapid City Rush to the Central League play-offs championship in North America.

That tally for Rapid City came over 53 matches – and he has made only 33 appearances for Devils so far this season.

Pelle, a graduate of Harvard University, has fired 32 goals and added 26 assists for Devils, He is one of three Cardiff players among the Elite League’s top six scorers.

MICHIGAN SMASHES WORLD RECORD

Michigan smashed the world record for a ice hockey event by pulling in maximum crowds. The huge crowd shrugged off a wind-chill factor of just above freezing to smash the previous record for an ice hockey match, set at this year’s World Hockey Championships in Germany, by more than 35,000 fans. Back in May, the Veltins-Arena in Gelsenkirchen pulled in 77,803 spectators for Germany’s 2-1 win over the United States.

RPI WINS A THRILLER

RPI won a thrilling match against Bowling Green. Bryan Brutlag scored 20 seconds into overtime to lead the RPI Engineers hockey team to a thrilling 3-2 victory over Bowling Green State University in the championship game of the 60th Annual Rensselaer Invitational at Houston Field House on Saturday night.

The Falcons (6-10) knotted the game at two with only 10 seconds remaining in the final period when David Solway scored off a pass from Brett Mohler.
